Naples man accused of stealing more than $25k from his former employer – Diverse Bulletin

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – A Naples man was arrested for stealing more than $25,000 from his former employer.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said 72-year-old David Mowery was arrested for scheming to defraud $20,000-$50,000 and grand theft of more than $20,000.

Detectives with CCSO’s Economic Crimes Section said Mowery was a contract bookkeeper for a Naples landscaping business for more than two years, starting in April 2016. He was responsible for accounting, financial services with access to money, bank accounts, and Quickbooks.

Mowery also had check-writing authorities and prepared weekly financial statements, Collier County deputies said.

After he left the job in November 2018, it was found that he had been altering records and embezzling funds. CCSO investigators said he was able to do this by miscoding vendor entries, skimming paychecks, and stealing petty cash.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office found that Mowery misappropriated $25,895.16. He was arrested at his home early Tuesday morning and was booked into the Collier County Jail. Deputies said he was later released after posting a $20,000 bond.
