Brazil: 600k COVID deaths, cases slowing

Brazil has recorded 404 deaths and 16,451 new cases of COVID-19 in its most recent 24-hour reporting period, the health ministry says.

The South American country on Friday became the second nation after the United States to pass 600,000 deaths from the virus.

The official death toll has now risen to 600,829, with more than 21 million cases registered since the pandemic began.

There are signs, however, that infections in Brazil are finally slowing, as the country ramps up vaccinations after a slow start.

More than 70 per cent of Brazilians have received a first dose, compared to 65 per cent in the United States.
